Willkommen in Südafrika
Südafrika - South Africa is a large, diverse and incredibly beautiful country. Occupying the southern tip of Africa, its long coastline stretches more than 2 500km - from the desert border with Namibia on the Atlantic coast, southwards around the tip of Africa and then north to the border with subtropical Mozambique on the Indian Ocean. The country boasts an excellent infrastructure, which comes as a surprise to many visitors. This is where you will find the meeting place of two great oceans, warm weather that lasts most of the year, and big game that roam just beyond the city lights.
For many people, the animals alone are reason to visit - South Africa's fabulous animal life is more varied than just the famous Big Five – it also a bird watchers’ paradise. And it is not only on the land that animal lovers can enjoy the wildlife, because South Africa is one of best destinations worldwide for watching marine mammals. In early June, the southern right whales leave their Antarctic feeding grounds and travel down to the Cape Coast, while the humpback whales arrive with their calves in early November. These huge beasts sometimes loll around mere metres from the shore, offering a sight not soon forgotten.
There are, of course, various other reasons to visit South Africa: attractive beaches, some of the world’s best surf, a spectacular range of diverse scenery, eco-systems found nowhere else in the world, and the opportunity to experience African culture. South Africa is one of the great cultural meeting points of the African continent - these days it is known as the “rainbow nation”, an apt description for the rich cultural kaleidoscope that is South Africa.
If botany is your interest, you could wish for no better destination. South Africa is the only country to contain an entire floral kingdom and has the third-highest level of biodiversity in the world.
Africa has long been the adventurer’s dream destination, and South Africa is no exception. It is host to a wide variety of adventure activities - whatever your preference, there is bound to be an adventure to keep you happy.
Conditions of entry
To travel to South Africa German citizens need a passport that at least must be valid 6 months. A visa is not required.
Climate
Seasons are opposite to those of the northern hemisphere. Warm temperate conditions are typical of South Africa, making it a popular destination for sunshine-seekers.
South Africa is renowned for almost seven months of sun-shine. From May to August, temperatures drop. However, generally speaking, April and May are the most temperate months. In certain areas, however, notably the hot, humid KwaZulu-Natal coast, Mpumalanga and the Limpopo Province, June and July are the ideal holiday months. The wide expanses of ocean on three sides of South Africa have a moderating influence on its climate. More apparent, however, are the effects of the warm Agulhas and cold Benguela currents along the east and west coasts, respectively. While Durban (east coast) and Port Nolloth (west coast) lie more or less on the same latitude, there is a difference of at least 6 degrees centigrade in their mean annual tempera-tures.
Currency
The local currency is the South African Rand (SAR) = 100 cents.
In nearly all hotels and restaurants payment can be settled by credit card.
