Capetown, Cape and Vineyards
Cape Town, the "Mother City", is the oldest city in South Africa and is famed for its hospitality. Snugly located between the ocean and the mountain, with a national park as its heart, it has a reputation as one of the world's most beautiful cities.
Cape Town has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years, and is a rare blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and African culture. Between beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, traditional dancers performing in the streets, the smell of spicy Malay cooking and the taste of a well-made wine, the “Rainbow Nation” can be experienced first-hand.
Cape Town has a diverse range of attractions, sights and activities to offer.
Experience special attractions like Table Mountain, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), the Wine Routes, where world-class wines are produced and the internationally acclaimed Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Enjoy scenic drives to Cape Point and Camps Bay, or play a round of golf on one of the first-rate courses.
Adventure sports enthusiasts can dive with great white sharks, abseil and paraglide amidst scenic landscapes, go dolphin and whale watching, hike, sail, surf and more.
The Cape Winelands is an area of spellbinding natural beauty, and with its rich cultural heritage and world-renowned wines it is a favourite destination. Majestic mountains form a dramatic background for the restored Cape Dutch farmsteads, with their distinctive gables and thatched roofs. The Cape winelands are some of the most scenic in the world and wine tourism is one of South Africa’s fastest growing industries.
South African wines are considered among the best in the world, and for many years South African wines have internationally earned good reviews. Various top wine estates are located in the scenic Cape area. Tours of these estates and their cellars combine the area’s natural beauty with informative wine tastings and the opportunity to purchase some of the local wines.
Most of the country’s vineyards are found in the Western Cape and they stretch from the coastal areas to the plains of the Little Karoo. Traditionally, the Cape Winelands included the cellars around Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and Franschhoek. However, the industry has gained a new momentum and now the area usually also includes routes such as the Constantia, Durbanville, Darling and Walker Bay winelands.
